Back to the Future: How Heart2Heart is using technology to reach seniors in care centers

Heart2Heart is learning firsthand how to powerfully deploy technology to reach seniors who are isolated.

As we explore this topic of technology, I wanted to explain how our innovative iPads for Seniors program is already making a difference.

Earlier this year, we received a grant to purchase 250 Apple iPads, specifically to be used in care centers in Broward County. Each care center in the program receives at least five iPads to be shared among its residents.

When we deliver the iPads to the care centers, they are already programmed with the center’s Wifi password. As soon as an iPads turns on, it loads up the curated apps designed especially with seniors in mind. Our system recognizes the device by its serial number, allowing us to maintain the devices remotely.

On the simplified home screen, we have included training videos that our digital outreach coordinator filmed in-house. The videos break down how to use the iPads and get started with the specific apps that are already installed.

Video calls are especially user-friendly on the Heart2Heart iPads. Thanks to our partnership with Jamf, residents connect with their loved ones or a volunteer in only one step.

A senior opens the Virtual Visits app and types in a phone number or email address of the person they want to reach. The loved one then receives a message with a link. That link will automatically connect to a video call with the senior on the very iPad they’re holding, all while being HIPAA-compliant.

Care Centers have coordinated schedules with Heart2Heart Digital Volunteers to ensure they can meet with seniors in need of companionship at just the right time. The centers provide us with a fact sheet about each isolated senior so that the volunteer can ask starter questions so that the first conversation is not too awkward.

The funds for Heart2Heart’s new C.A.R.E. Tech Program were provided through a grant from The Salah Foundation. The Salah Foundation is a private foundation by invitation only.

Apple provided the iPads to Heart2Heart at a discounted rate. We also partnered with BFA Technologies to help us license and manage the devices and Jamf to create that user-friendly video call experience.

Our goal is to make connecting with isolated seniors as simple as possible. Read more stories about how iPads for Seniors program is making a difference here.

Next week, we’ll share tips we’ve learned for getting seniors used to new technology.

This blog is a frank conversation about what it means to age in our society.

I want us to consider what a wider range of diverse experiences when we talk about aging. I want to reflect on how we, as a community, want our neighbors and our mothers and fathers and our grandparents to live out their latter decades of life. I want us to consider each one of their voices as we strive to meet their needs.

Join me for weekly discussions about what it means to be a senior in South Florida and how we can and should respond to the growing needs of the aging population.

The Harvest is Plentiful—Will We Step Up?

By Juan Gallo, CEO of Heart2Heart Outreach

Senior ministry is often overlooked, yet the need has never been greater. As Matthew 9:37 reminds us, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few.” Many seniors are longing for connection, hope, and reassurance, yet too often, they are forgotten.

A recent encounter with an elderly neighbor reminded me of this urgency. She rushed to church each morning, afraid of being scolded for arriving late—more focused on performance than grace. In that moment, I reminded her of God’s deep love, something so many seniors need to hear.

Keeping Love Alive: Honoring Seniors & Embracing God’s Love This Valentine’s Day

Keeping Love Alive: Honoring Seniors & Embracing God’s Love This Valentine’s Day

A Message from Our CEO: Keeping Love Alive

Valentine’s Day is more than romance—it’s a reminder of selfless, enduring love rooted in faith. As we celebrate, let’s reflect on God’s unfailing love and share it with those who need it most—our seniors.

Many elderly individuals long for connection. This Valentine’s Day, let’s keep love alive through simple acts of kindness—a visit, a note, or a heartfelt conversation.

Love is more than words; it’s a choice to serve and uplift. Together, let’s remind our seniors they are seen, valued, and deeply loved.

2025: A New Year, A New Challenge

2025: A New Year, A New Challenge

As 2025 begins, I reflect on 2024 with gratitude and purpose. It was a tumultuous year—marked by change, uncertainty, and challenges that left many wondering, “what’s next?” From mysterious drones to growing community struggles, the year brought a sense of cognitive dissonance—the tension when reality clashes with our expectations.

For me, this dissonance was most striking in the faces of vulnerable seniors in our community, whose stories revealed the heartbreaking realities of isolation and need.

A Season of Nostalgia continued…..AND Gratitude

A Season of Nostalgia continued…..AND Gratitude

A recent visit to Providence Senior Living beautifully illustrated the power of nostalgia said Juan Gallo, Heart2Heart’s CEO. While playing an impromptu session on a Yamaha piano, I witnessed the profound impact music can have. One resident, moved to tears, shared how the melodies brought back memories of her childhood and her love for playing the piano—something she hadn’t done in years. Encouraged to try again, she rediscovered the joy of music, her radiant smile lighting up the room.
