It’s That Time of Year: The Meaning Behind H2H Red Gala and This Year’s Theme

September 3, 2024

It’s that time of year! This is what I say almost every morning when I walk into the office about four months before our yearly Gala. This year, we moved up our Gala by almost a month, and we changed the venue to the very well-known and sought-after LaVan Venue. Now, the reason I say “it’s that time of year” is because it makes me feel excited, yet it also makes me feel nervous. For those who know me well, nervousness is a feeling that often does not describe me, but in the case of our yearly Gala, it keeps me up at night.

I suppose the reason for this is that it’s the night when we showcase everything we have done up to that moment and throughout the year in front of our constituency. It’s the time of year when we celebrate, but it’s also the time of year when we ask for specific funds to be able to do more.

Not all non-profits host Galas. Some say that it’s too much on the staff and that it’s too expensive. I’m grateful that H2H has a diverse staff with a myriad of talents, but it’s true—it does take a lot from the team. In our case, though, it’s been a profitable event, which is HUGE! The money we raise on the night of the Gala are unrestricted funds that we can allocate directly to seniors who are falling through the social services gaps. It’s for the seniors who are waiting for services to kick in and for authorizations to go through. The funds raised that night are also used to keep the lights on in the office and to train and grow our staff as the needs in our senior community grow.

I want to thank so many of you who have been involved in our Galas since we started hosting them back in 2017. Do you remember all the different themes? I also want to thank our generous and consistent sponsors.

I’d especially like to thank and highlight this year’s Double Diamond Sponsor at $20,000.00: Gregg and Liz Wallick. I’d also like to thank The Bill Kent Family Foundation for being this year’s Diamond Sponsor at $15,000.00.

This year’s Red Gala theme is “Under the Stars”; the stars are the seniors we serve, who shine their wisdom and love on us every day we have the privilege to be in their lives.

2025: A New Year, A New Challenge

As 2025 begins, I reflect on 2024 with gratitude and purpose. It was a tumultuous year—marked by change, uncertainty, and challenges that left many wondering, “what’s next?” From mysterious drones to growing community struggles, the year brought a sense of cognitive dissonance—the tension when reality clashes with our expectations.

For me, this dissonance was most striking in the faces of vulnerable seniors in our community, whose stories revealed the heartbreaking realities of isolation and need.

This blog is a frank conversation about what it means to age in our society.

I want us to consider what a wider range of diverse experiences when we talk about aging. I want to reflect on how we, as a community, want our neighbors and our mothers and fathers and our grandparents to live out their latter decades of life. I want us to consider each one of their voices as we strive to meet their needs.

Join me for weekly discussions about what it means to be a senior in South Florida and how we can and should respond to the growing needs of the aging population.

A Season of Nostalgia continued…..AND Gratitude

A recent visit to Providence Senior Living beautifully illustrated the power of nostalgia said Juan Gallo, Heart2Heart’s CEO. While playing an impromptu session on a Yamaha piano, I witnessed the profound impact music can have. One resident, moved to tears, shared how the melodies brought back memories of her childhood and her love for playing the piano—something she hadn’t done in years. Encouraged to try again, she rediscovered the joy of music, her radiant smile lighting up the room.
